Environmental Shareholders Unite!!

By David M Handelman On July 26, 2009 Under

Corporations are causing so many of the biggest problems that humans and our planet face today.  They also have the power to solve a lot of these problems.  But corporations are entities with tunnel vision towards one thing: profit.

Why? To please shareholders.

 Why? Because that’s what shareholders want, and the market demands… ever-increasing profits:  The third quarter to be bigger than the 2nd quarter. All quarters to be bigger than last year.  And this unrelentless march towards bigger and bigger profits MUST be achieved at all costs… measures like:  lay people off, lower their benefits, move manufacturing and customer service overseas, source cheaper materials, dispose of waste cheaply etc.  I call this CICT (pronounced CYST) the ‘Catastrophe of the Insatiable Corporate Treadmill’.  And this CICT is killing us!

The result is a planet that is devoid of resources and wild, natural spaces but filled with trash and toxins; people who are unhappy, dissatisfied and disconnected from themselves; poverty for many and wealth for few; and climate change;

So what can we do about it?

One way to make a major impact, as investors, would be to show corporations that we care about their environmental and sustainability policies.  If we can change the culture of the stock markets such that greener companies are more attractive investments, then more corporations will want to be green.

If every shareholder of a company wrote to the directors of their corporations to express their concern for the environment and their hope that the company be more sustainable, this would have a huge impact.

If people who are buying stocks and funds choose greener and more ethical companies/funds, caring more about sustainability than just profitability, then this also would have a huge impact.

Many people do not make the connection that their 401k and their investments, which they want to have high yields for a comfortable retirement, is at the very root of our CICT.

Make the connection and become a conscientious investor!!
