Corporate Social Responsibility Internationally: The Front Line

By David M Handelman On March 8, 2009 Under
Ecuadorians vs Chevron Texaco

Some friends who have viewed my website have asked me what my obsession is with Ecuador and this case with Chevron.  There are so many examples of corporate irresponsibility (unfortunately) around the world, and so many interesting ways to try to help corporations become more responsible and ethical.  Why this case?

But I focus on this lawsuit between 30,000 Ecuadorian villagers and Chevron, because it is THE most important law suit concerning international corporate responsibility today.  The PRECEDENT that will be set by this case will help change the course of history forever!!  Here are the reasons why:

  • Chevron, one of the largest oil companies in the US, will be held accountable for irresponsible actions in Ecuador.
  • The judgment against Chevron will be binding in the United States.
  • This will be the first time a large multi-national corporation will be held accountable for billions of dollars in clean-up, remediation and damages for affected local populations.

This will send an alarming message to corporations around the world which act irresponsibly, environmentally or socially.  Once this precedent is set, concerned global citizens can use it against irresponsible corporations everywhere.  That’s why I focus on it, and you should too.

What do you think?  Please leave a comment at the bottom of this page. Please sign our petition to tell Chevron what you think.

This evil company needs to be held responsible for that mess! Chevron is willing to do anything to avoid helping the Ecuadorians suffering from their contamination. Denying, downplaying and hiding the truth- that’s all Chevron can do
Here’s an interesting blog about what is surely the largest environmental disaster on the planet: http://www.thechevronpit.blogspot.com
