Chevron Texaco Oil Disaster in Ecuador – Refusing to accept responsibility
Chevron Texaco is pulling out all the stops to try to shirk their responsibility in the Oil Disasters of the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. Chevron is doing everything they can to avoid responsibility in the case, and attacking Ecuador and the lawsuit every way they can. This week, they are attempting to lobby the US Government to drop Ecuador’s preferred trade status under the Andrean Trade Preferences Act.
This was published this week in the Washington Times. Please click here to read the original article in the times. Unfortunately, the article omits some important facts:
- The case was moved to Ecuador at Chevron Texaco’s request.
- The documentary entitled, “CRUDE” was produced completely independently of the plaintiffs of the case (click here to learn more about the film)
There is no logical reason why the trade relationship between the US and Ecuador should be affected by a lawsuit that is binding in US and Ecuadorian law. Chevron Texaco, probably wanted to have the case moved to Ecuador in the first place, because they felt they could buy or bribe their way to a favourable decision (of course this is pure speculation). Now that it appears that the tides are turning against them, Chevron Texaco is getting more and more desperate in their attempts to deflect their responsibility, counter-attack Ecuador and do everything they can to avoid having to pay out, what may be up to $27 Billion in clean-up costs and damages.
This is one of the most important legal battles of our time, as it is the first time that a large, multi-national US corporation may be held accountable for their irresponsible and damaging behaviour out of the country. And it’s no joking matter, it might cost Chevron $27 Billion!
It is important to spread the word about this. More importantly, communicating with members of Congress to support Ecuador, and hold Chevron Texaco accountable for their actions. Please click here to find out who represents you in Congress, so you can send them an email!
